"You're going to be the one to make a change in this world Nicholas..." little did he know that these would be the last words Nicholas' mother had said to him before he entered a world of terror. To Nicholas, he was in nothing more than a nightmare that would never end. As he batted his eyes, waking up into an unfamiliar surrounding, Nicholas quickly rose to a seated position.
"Where am I?" exclaimed the frightened young adult as he jumped to his feet looking around. "MOM?!" there was nothing but quiet as he continued walking around the room. "DAD?!" called out the boy once again, and once again he was met by pure silence.
A cold shiver ran up the arms of the young man as he stood in the center of his room, and crossed his arms to fight back the frightening shivers. [/size] TBC by Any human[/center]

LORELAI RAYNE let mercy come and wash away what we've done Sooner or later, time begins to mean nothing. Everything folds in on itself. Hours become minutes, minutes become seconds, seconds amplify into decades. How old was she now? Twenty-seven? Forty-nine? Three-hundred eighty-one? She cracked a grudging smile. Three-hundred eighty-one would be a disgusting age to live to. Weak, withered, skin as delicate as wrinkled paper - it was difficult to suppress a shudder. Under twenty felt old these days, but who's counting? What's left to count? All days felt the same: dark, blurred, hazy. One could easily ask, where's the excitement? Ha! Zombies.
On her second lap around the dorm, she realized she had stopped comprehending the pages before her. Great. How many pages had she mindlessly skimmed over? She snapped the book shut with an irritated grunt.
"Mom?! Dad?!"
Whoops. Picking up the pace, she skidded around the corner and came to a stop in front of an open doorway. A bewildered young man stared back at her, mouth gaping, arms folded. "Oh, good," Lorelai breathed, relaxing. "You're actually awake this time."
Hesitantly, she took a step toward him, free hand outstretched. "Try not to move too quickly, okay? I don't want you to pass out again and make the concussion worse." She offered him a shy, comforting smile. "My name's Lorelai."

"Try not to move too quickly, okay? I don't want you to pass out again and make the concussion worse." the girl in front of Nicholas stood there, who he had no idea who she was. Right now, he didn't even know where he was for that matter. "My name's Lorelai." as the girl exclaimed, Nicholas gave a shy smile as he spoke.
"I'm... Nicholas, but you can call me Nick or whatever suits you..." he had heard it all before, so there wasn't anything she could say to make him feel less of himself. With as much confidence as he can have, he managed to mutter out one question "Where are we exactly?" asked the lad as he looked around the room slowly. [/size] tbc by Lorelai

LORELAI RAYNE do you remember me, or the kid I used to be She let her free hand fall gently to her side, her smile lingering as she watched the boy glance nervously around. Slowly, her smile faded. It was what they had feared after all. He couldn't remember what happened. However, he did seem to know his own name. She tilted her head lightly to the side. What else could he remember? His parents? She quickly suppressed a shudder. Oh, please, Lord, don't let him remember. Let them not have been his parents. Let them have been strangers. Please. As quickly has her smile disappeared, it returned, lighting up her whole face.
"We were worried you couldn't remember. This,
[/color]" she swept her free arm out, " is the Red Fortress. We're the last safe resistance and this is the last safe place around here." She paused, searching for the right words. Her eyes dropped down to the book in her right hand. She fiddled with it, shifting her weight uneasily from one foot to the other. " We, um, we found you. About four days ago, I think. Sunday. You were... there was... there was this infected herd. They chased you and--[/color]" she glanced up at him " -- some other people. Those behind you were the first to fall..." She paused, her eyes clouding slightly, letting herself slip into memory. She tore out of the padlock door, flanked by several other rescue agents. There they were - the infected - crawling, running, chasing after a few humans. A boy was in front, followed closely by four or five others. "Help us!" the boy shouted, throwing himself against the heavy gate. She ran, they all ran, as fast as they possibly could, but the infected were gaining ground.
"Duck!" Lorelai screamed, her hand outstretched, mouth gaping in horror as an infected woman launched herself at one of the human men. "No!" The man went down, infected woman with him. The others kept sprinting - the boy continued to rattle the gate. "Help us!" he cried. "Help! Faster!"
They tried, Lorelai and the others. But they were still too slow. The infected caught up to the other humans of the group, picking them off one by one - they all went down, kicking and screaming.
Lorelai was first to reach the gate. She yanked aside the heavy metal lock and threw the door open. "Come on!" she screamed, grabbing the boy by his shirt. She yanked hard, throwing him to the ground within Red Fortress's walls. With one quick look, she took in that no other humans were left. The infected flew at her like wild beasts. She slammed the gate closed, hastily securing the locks. They lunged at her, claws outstretched, but her mind was already on the boy.
He lay, unconscious, on the ground. Her comrades were crouched on the floor around him. One of the bigger men gathered him into his arms. "Come on," he rumbled, carrying the boy toward the door. Lorelai followed, shoulders hunched. If they'd only been faster, they could've... they could have... the others...The memory flashed through her head within seconds - probably so quickly that Nicholas barely noticed. " You were the only survivor,[/color]" she looked down at her book again. " I was so worried you wouldn't make it. You hit your head hard." Her light blue eyes lifted back to his face. " But you don't have to worry now. You'll be safe here."[/blockquote][/blockquote][/sup]

Not knowing what to say, or what happened, he soft spoke once more... "Where are my parents?" he was sure that he had parents, or maybe not. Right now all he knew was that he was frightened out of his mind. tbc Lorelai

LORELAI RAYNE I still see them in my dreams Heat and color rushed quickly to her face. This was what she had feared. His parents. His parents. Oh god, his parents. She was almost ninety-five percent sure they had been with him during the attack. The woman, dark haired, fair skinned, wide, confused eyes - his mother, for sure. But what was she to say? "Sorry, but we didn't get there fast enough."? "Sorry, your parents are dead."? For a brief second, she closed her eyes. What was she to say to him? To the boy, just barely a man.
Does she lie?
"I think..." her voice swiftly trailed away. She looked up at him, taking a few steps closer. They were less than a foot away now. She reached out with her free hand, lightly grazing his arm with her fingertips. "No, I know. Your parents... they didn't make it. They were with you until the end, Nicholas,
[/color]" she whispered. What else could she do but try to comfort him? " But... they aren't your parents anymore. To you, they have to be dead." Regretfully, she'd seen it before. She had, herself, chased after those trying to rescue their loved ones. It didn't matter that they were clearly infected - they didn't want to accept the truth. " Nicholas," she breathed helplessly. " Right now, you just have to focus on healing."[/blockquote][/blockquote][/sup] tbc;; Nicholas

Nicholas couldn't understand what he heard, but then again at this time frame, he didn't even know much about his parents... he just knew that he had some, or thought he did. Having no idea what to say or do, Nicholas looked at Lorelai and nodded slowly.
"Thanks..." he said to her, cause at least she was honest with him. Feeling his stomach knot up inside him, he placed his hands on his stomach and began shaking on the inside.

LORELAI RAYNE don't trip, precious, I'm here She let her hand drop back to her side. His reaction... it was so... vague. How much did he truly remember? She had assumed he just couldn't remember the attack, but to not remember anything previously - that was troubling. She glanced briefly behind her. Even from within the room she knew no one was within earshot, nevertheless helping-range. I wonder where Doc is, she thought, picturing the thick, muscled man from the attack. He should know he has severe memory loss.
Looking back to Nicholas, she attempted a weak smile. Without Doc around, could she risk telling him herself? Or could he already tell? She'd never suffered from amnesia before. Maybe it was as obvious as losing a limb. But if he couldn't remember what he'd forgotten-- agh, shit. The whole process was just painful to think about.
While Nicholas wrapped his arms around his midsection, Lorelai took a moment to glance around. He had one of the many replicated resting rooms within this particular wing of the Fortress. Pale white walls, single bed with light blue sheets, off-white carpet, no windows. They couldn't risk one of the infected breaking through the barriers and smashing its way through a window. She sighed, turning her attention back to him. Gently, she tucked a strand of dark brown hair behind her ear.
"Maybe now's not the best time to dump too much information on you at once." She took a few steps back, relieving him of the invasion of his personal space. "You've been out of it for a while - are you hungry? We can grab some food. I could show you around a bit so you don't have to hunt me down every time you need to go somewhere.

Nicholas kept his hands around his knotted stomach, cause afterall he was hungry. Looking up at Lorelai he decided that while walking to get some food, he could probably see where he was.
"Think that there's any noodles?" he didn't know why he asked for noodles, but he did nonetheless.

LORELAI RAYNE I'll be the one to protect you from all your demons She cracked an amused smile, glancing down at his clutched stomach. She wasn't at all surprised by his quick request. Many survivors turned to their comfort foods. "Of course we have pasta," she assured him. She reached out, prying free one of his hands to hold it tightly. "We've got just about everything here - gardens included." Letting another smile take over, she tugged him gently toward the door. Once out in the hallway, she paused, giving him a chance to glance around.
The corridor was long, but wide, dotted here and there with closed wooden doors. The walls were a soothing pale green - the carpet a mild tan. She looked up at him and smiled again. "Don't be worried about getting lost. It happens to everyone." She chuckled and pulled him further down the hall. They passed one, two, five, seven doors before the hallway stretched out into a big, open room. She paused again. "To the right are the bathrooms. To the left,
[/color]" she nodded toward the entrance of another hall, " is where the kitchen, living rooms, and storage lockers are." As the two trekked along, Lorelai's thoughts began to wander. I wonder if Doc'll be pissed about Nicholas leaving his room.. she fired a quick glance up at the man walking next to her. She had no idea what she should and shouldn't be doing. Technically, all she did was rescue. Run outside, grab the humans, kill the infected, bring the humans inside, leave them to Doc and the others. What was it about Nicholas that had lead her to checking on him every hour for the last four days? Perhaps it was the loss of his parents. Maybe it was the guilt of knowing she could've saved them. Saved him. She veered sharply to the right, giving a nod toward the sign that pointed them toward the kitchen and dining area. Another few yards, one more turn, and a couple steps later, the low hallway split open into a large room full of tables and chairs. They were the only ones there. Quietly, she directed Nicholas to a table in the corner, flashed him a smile, and disappeared. Seconds later she returned, slipping into the chair across from him, wearing another smile. " Noodles it is. So, while we wait,[/color]" she folded her hands on the table. " Do you mind telling me how much you do remember?"[/blockquote][/blockquote][/sup] tbc;; Nicholas ( he gave me permission to take him through the halls )

"I remember... my graduation, and that's about it." Nicholas replied, but didn't want to go much into it all because even that was a bit blury.
"And I remember having parents... I just don't remember who they were." Nicholas said as he looked at Lorelai, not know what else to say... however a question did come across his mind.
"If I may ask... why are you so nice to me? I mean yeah there's stuff going on, but why not just let me go to their way of life?" asked Nicholas, not wanting anything personal... just a few answered questions of his own.

LORELAI RAYNE tears of angels are falling Anger ripped through her chest like fire. Why didn't they just let him be like them? Why did they save him? Why? A violent shudder lashed at her core. Why. Why. Why. Why. Filthy, disgusting, empty creatures! Man's worst nightmare. Man's experiment gone wrong. Why, indeed. Another flame exploded, rattling around in her ribcage. She curled her fingers into fists and glanced quickly down, wanting to hide her reaction from Nicholas.
Nicholas.
It wasn't his fault. He didn't know. He could barely remember his own parents, for God's sake. It wasn't his fault. Carefully, she uncurled her fingers. Her breathing was calm, her expression smooth, as she looked up at him. A smile, disgustingly fake this time, glued itself to her face. "You want to know why we rescue who we can - why we rescued you?" She took a much needed pause to come up with sane-enough words. Freaking him out was the last thing she wanted. It wasn't his fault.
The corners of her smile began to relax. "'Their way of life' is our fault. It's our fault, the human's fault, that they live the way they do.
[/color]" She glanced away from him. Her scorching blue eyes aimlessly searched the empty cafeteria. When she spoke again, her voice was quieter. " We have to save as many as possible. It's not their fault. They can't help it...[/color]" Lorelai looked down at the table. " It's not their fault. Just like it wouldn't have been your fault, Nicholas."[/sup][/blockquote][/blockquote] tbc;; Nicholas

Nicholas knew that he could've given off the impression that he wasn't glad to be saved, but he really didn't mean to. "Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that you got to me in time... but like as I said, I remember my graduation... and the way people who weren't worried about me, so I just figured..." In his mind, whether his memory was gone or not, he thought that no human could care for him if he obviously wasn't cared for by his fellow classmate.
